Sudden cardiac death phenotype
Name phenotype_scd
Chapter Mortality/Death recording
Definition
A composite of sudden cardiac death and ventricular arrhythmia / cardiac arrest.
Data sources GPRD, HES, ONS
Dictionaries Read, OPCS 4, ICD 10, ICD 9
Repeated No
Agreed 23/11/2012 (Revision 2)
Implementation
Sudden cardiac death

Primary care diagnosis of sudden cardiac death: sudden_death_gprd, category 3
Secondary care diagnosis of sudden cardiac death: sudden_death_hes, category 3
Sudden cardiac death as the cause of death: sudden_death_ons, category 3
Sudden cardiac death prior to 2001: sudden_death_onsicd9, category 3

Ventricular arrhythmia / cardiac arrest:
Includes ventricular tachycardia, ventricular fibrillation, re-entry ventricular arrhythmia, implantable cardioverter defibrillator, asystole, pulseless electrical activity, cardiac arrest or resuscitation

Primary care diagnosis of ventricular arrhythmia, cardiac arrest, implantable cardioverter defibrillator or resuscitation: arrest_gprd, categories 4, 5, 6, 7
Secondary care diagnosis of ventricular arrhythmia, cardiac arrest or resuscitation: arrest_hes, categories 4, 5, 7, 8
Secondary care procedure code for implantable cardioverter defibrillator or resuscitation: categories 6, 7
Ventricular arrhythmia, cardiac arrest or resuscitation as the cause of death: arrest_ons, categories 4, 5, 7, 8
Ventricular arrhythmia, cardiac arrest or resuscitation as the cause of death prior to 2001: arrest_onsicd9, categories 4, 5, 7, 8

Version 1 of this phenotype had an identical algorithm but used version 1 of the variable arrest_opcs, which included two additional OPCS codes: X501 (Direct current cardioversion) and X502 (External cardioversion NEC). These codes tended to be used to record cardioversion in patients with atrial fibrillation rather than ventricular arrhythmia.
