Liver disease for Charlson index (secondary care)
Name liver_charlson_hes
Chapter Digestive system diseases/Liver disease
Definition
Acording to Charlson, mild liver disease includes patients with cirrhosis but no portal hypertension or variceal bleeding. We also exclude codes for 'sequelae' of liver disease or chronic autommune or viral hepatitis (unless they mention cirrhosis).

'Severe liver disease' includes codes for cirrhosis and portal hypertension, oesophageal varices or
liver failure. We assume that it does not include acute hepatic failure. The ICD-10 list of Sundararajan et al. includes only K729, K766, K767, K721, i.e. hepatic failure (unspecified) portal hypertension, varices and hepatorenal syndrome. Hepatic encephalopathy is included in hepatic failure in ICD-10 and does not have a specific code.
