Definition
Acording to Charlson (1987), this category includes patients with SLE, polymyositis, MCTD, polymyalgia rheumatica, and moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis. Note that the ICD-10 codes (Sundararajan) are: M050, M051, M052, M053, M058, M059 (rheumatoid arthritis), M060, M063, M069 (rheumatoid arthritis, rheumatoid nodule), M32 SLE, M332 Polymyositis, M34 Systemic sclerosis, M353 Polymyalgia rheumatica, but NOT: M06.1 Adult-onset Still's disease, M06.2 Rheumatoid bursitis, M06.4 Inflammatory polyarthropathy, M06.8 Other specified rheumatoid arthritis. Sjogren and dermatomyositis are also excluded. For this code list we will include dermatomyositis in category 4 (as it is a systemic disease) but not Sjogren as it is less commonly a multisystem disease. Category 3 is to be used for calculating the Charlson index.
